Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario All-Stars is, for Nintendo fans, something like the holy grail of collector's care for one's own classics. In 1993 Nintendo released a collection on the Super Nintendo that reforged the plumber's entire golden era into 16-bit graphics and sound: Super Mario Bros., the lost and brutally hard Lost Levels (until then practically unknown in Europe and America as "the Japanese second game"), Super Mario Bros. 2 and the monumental Super Mario Bros. 3.
This is no mere port, the games got completely redrawn backgrounds, smoother animation, improved music and, above all, a save system that was missing in the original NES versions. Thanks to it you can enjoy even the most demanding sections without endlessly repeating from the start. All wrapped into a single cartridge, with a clear selection menu.
Retro enthusiasts love this compilation as the best way to play through Mario's history all in one place and in the best possible form. For many Europeans and Americans it was the very first chance to play the legendary Lost Levels. There's also a rarer variant with Super Mario World added, which collectors still crave to this day. All-Stars is a textbook example of how to care for a classic with respect.
