A port of an arcade western with cowboys hunting bounties; points for jumping on enemies.

Sunset Riders is an action side-scroller set in the Wild West, in which the player (alone or with a friend) picks one of the cowboys hunting bounties on bandits and criminals. The game is a port of the popular arcade cabinet and carries its core over – progressing through levels while shooting enemies, collecting various weapons from pistols to shotguns, and occasional on-horseback sections – to the 16-bit console as well, albeit with certain changes compared to the arcade original, such as a lower number of simultaneously playable characters. Each character has its own look and small differences in behavior, and players can rack up points by jumping on enemies and chaining hits, rewarding an aggressive, confident playstyle.

Technically, the SNES version offers colorful, cartoonishly rendered western towns, saloons, and canyons, accompanied by upbeat music that evokes the atmosphere of a genre parody of cowboy films. The levels are laced with small references to western movies and genre clichés, from bar brawls to train chases, and the game makes open fun of this folklore. The controls are simple and direct, with emphasis on quick reflexes and two-player cooperation, placing the game among the beloved titles for playing together. Reviews particularly praised its fun factor and faithfulness to the arcade experience, though some players noted the trimmed-down content compared to the arcade cabinet, where up to four players could play at once.

Sunset Riders still holds the reputation of one of the most enjoyable cooperative run-and-guns of its generation. Its lighthearted tone, distinctive characters, and well-balanced difficulty make it a title that plays great even decades later, and it ranks among the beloved classics of the genre on SNES, to which players gladly return specifically for the shared two-player experience. Although the arcade version remains the technically richer one, the home port found its own loyal audience thanks to the comfort of playing in the living room, and it remains among the most frequently recommended western action games on this console.

Why play it: For buddies looking for cooperative fun, Sunset Riders is an obvious choice – its lighthearted tone, distinctive characters, and balanced difficulty make it one of the most beloved western run-and-guns on SNES.
