The Ninja Warriors

Akce / Beat 'em up 1994 Natsume ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A beat-'em-up-paced side-scroller; androids topple a dictatorial regime in a cyberpunk setting.

The Ninja Warriors is an action game combining elements of the side-scroller and the beat-'em-up, in which the player controls one of the ninja androids sent to destroy a dictatorial regime in a dark, cyberpunk-infused city. Combat unfolds at a slower, weightier pace than in typical platformers – characters attack in strings of punches and kicks, dodge, and parry attacks, giving the game an almost beat-'em-up feel to every encounter despite the player moving linearly through levels full of enemies. Each of the androids differs in strength, speed, and the length of combo attacks, so the choice of character at the start of the game significantly affects the style used to deal with opponents.

The most striking feature of the SNES version is the technical execution of the backgrounds – the game uses several layers of parallax scrolling that make the city feel unusually deep and alive, which at the time of release counted among the most visually impressive demonstrations of the console's capabilities. Ruined streets, neon signs, and industrial complexes in the background scroll smoothly at different speeds, creating the impression of a truly sprawling, living city. The grim, electronic music matches the dystopian atmosphere perfectly and, together with the visual style, creates a dense, almost cinematic impression. The game did not achieve much commercial success at the time, but among players seeking graphical and audio quality it quickly earned a reputation as a hidden gem, one often discussed primarily in connection with its technical side.

Today The Ninja Warriors is prized above all by collectors and fans of technically ambitious titles as a demonstration of just how far parallax graphics could go on the SNES. Its atmosphere and visual style make it a cult item that is still recommended today as one of the overlooked gems of the console's library, even though it is a relatively short and straightforward title. It is precisely the combination of a slower, weightier combat system with unusually elaborate visuals that makes it a title that comes up in discussions of SNES technical showpieces far more often than its commercial reception at the time would suggest.

Why play it: For lovers of technically ambitious titles and atmosphere, The Ninja Warriors is worth trying for its stunning parallax graphics, even though it is a fairly short and straightforward game.
