RoboCop Versus The Terminator
RoboCop Versus The Terminator for the Super Nintendo is a port of an action game that first appeared on the SEGA Mega Drive, bringing to Nintendo's console the same run-and-gun action concept inspired by the comic book crossover of both film franchises. Playing as RoboCop, the player moves through linear levels filled with robots, Skynet soldiers, and human opponents, gradually collecting increasingly powerful weapons and facing larger enemies that require different tactics than the usual endless waves of opponents. The basic gameplay skeleton remains the same across both platforms, differing mainly in the technical execution dictated by the different hardware of the two consoles and the way each one handles sound and color palette.
The Super Nintendo version, in many comparisons of the time, found itself in the shadow of its sibling on the Mega Drive, where the game felt more convincing thanks to faster action processing and smoother animation; on the SNES, the game's pace was perceived as somewhat more sluggish, which took away from some players' sense of a tense run-and-gun action title. On the other hand, the graphics benefited from the Super Nintendo's richer color palette and more detailed backgrounds, and although the rawness and grittiness carried over from the comic book source were preserved in the form of bloodier effects and a darker atmosphere than the console's typical platformer library offered.
As a licensed title combining two popular action brands, RoboCop Versus The Terminator on the SNES appealed especially to fans of both franchises, who appreciated the game's grittier tone compared to the console's more friendly library. Today it is seen as an interesting, if not flawless, example of porting a successful console game to a competing platform with all the compromises that entailed, and it is often compared precisely to the technically more confident Mega Drive version. For Super Nintendo owners, it nevertheless remained one of the few ways to try out the grittier action with both film licenses directly on their console.
