Point-and-click puzzles in an underwater mansion; searching for a brother amid whispering voices.

Mansion of Hidden Souls invites the player into a mysterious, partly underwater mansion full of supernatural puzzles and whispering voices, taking on the role of a girl searching for her lost brother, who vanished somewhere within the depths of the strange estate. The game is built on exploring pre-rendered, static scenes through which the player moves similarly to classic point-and-click adventures, solving logic puzzles based on observing the surroundings, combining found items, and gradually uncovering the symbolism tied to the mansion's inhabitants, among whom are anthropomorphic animal characters with their own small stories.

Visually, the game benefits from colorful, dreamlike environments and subtly animated details that lend an otherwise quiet, contemplative adventure a touch of fairy-tale magic along with a light, undefined unease permeating the flooded mansion's various rooms. The musical and sound accompaniment supports the meditative, slow pace of play, with the game placing emphasis on atmosphere, symbolism, and the sense of discovery rather than traditional challenge, combat, or time pressure, which sets it apart from most of the more action-oriented titles on the Saturn and brings it closer to fairy-tale storytelling than to tense horror.

At the time of release, it was a smaller, more marginal title in the Saturn's library that appealed more to players seeking unconventional, artistically styled adventures than to a mainstream audience expecting action, and it therefore stayed for a long time in the shadow of the console's more prominent exclusives. Today Mansion of Hidden Souls is valued by collectors and genre fans as a gentle, atmospheric piece demonstrating that the Saturn also offered room for calmer, puzzle-laced adventures outside the mainstream of action and RPG titles, and as a remarkable example of how diverse the console's lineup was even beyond the big, marketing-favored brands of the era.

Why play: For fans of calmer, puzzle-laced adventures, Mansion of Hidden Souls shows the gentle, atmospheric side of the Saturn's lineup beyond the big action and RPG brands.
