An unusual mix: diving into a blue hole by day, running a sushi restaurant by night.

Dave the Diver is an unusual blend of two completely different games. By day, the player dives the good-natured Dave into a mysterious blue hole, harpooning and netting fish, gathering resources, and dodging sharks, with each descent a single run limited by oxygen and backpack space. By night, the catch becomes the menu of a small sushi restaurant that must be run: the player sets prices, hires staff, upgrades kitchen equipment, and personally serves tea and delivers plates to guests during the rush hour. The two halves are interlinked, since the restaurant's success funds better diving gear, which in turn opens up deeper and more dangerous parts of the ocean.

Around this core the game keeps piling on more ideas: growing rice, farming fish, photographing marine species, cooperating with an undersea tribe, minigames parodying other genres, and story twists with an adventurous flavor. This constant switching between activities is exactly why the title holds your attention for dozens of hours without ever feeling repetitive. Visually it rests on detailed pixel art with an enormous number of animations and broadly comic-book humor that never takes itself seriously. On PlayStation 5 the game runs completely smoothly, with short loading between day and night, and the controller's haptics dole out resistance when reeling in a bigger fish. The music shifts with the time of day, from calm underwater pads to upbeat restaurant themes.

The game was received very well and became one of the most talked-about surprises of its time, praised for its sheer amount of content, its pacing, and its sense of humor; criticism pointed to the later stages leaning more heavily into restaurant management than some players would like. The title's influence can be seen in renewed interest in games that combine two unrelated systems. Today Dave the Diver feels like an unusually generous and relaxing experience where you often find that the promised single dive stretched into an entire evening.
