The Evil Within 2
The Evil Within 2 is the sequel to the horror game from Tango Gameworks, the studio led by the creator of the original Resident Evil titles, and it feels significantly more balanced than the first installment. Detective Sebastian Castellanos once again dives into the shared mental network known as STEM, this time for a very personal reason: he is searching for his daughter, whom he had believed dead. The result is a horror game that, alongside its monsters, deals with guilt, loss, and parental failure, and it is this personal layer that holds the whole game together.
The major change is structural. Part of the game takes place in the semi-open town of Union, which collapses and rearranges itself, and the player chooses how much side content and exploration to indulge in. Resources are limited, so the player constantly weighs whether to craft shotgun shells or save components for traps and healing items. Combat is slow and unpleasant, sneaking up on enemies from behind is often preferable to a direct firefight, and some creatures cannot be defeated at all, only escaped. Upgrading the character and weapons lets the player steer the playthrough more toward stealth or toward open resistance.
On PlayStation 4 the game leaned on a dense atmosphere of a fog-shrouded small town, striking lighting, and unsettling enemy design, among which a photographer working with frozen tableaux stands out. The sound is restrained, the music arrives in precisely measured doses, and silence matters just as much as the jump scares. Critics welcomed the sequel warmly, praising in particular its improved pacing and clearer story, though some fans of the original mourned the loss of its raw, disjointed charm. Today it stands as one of the best-playing survival horror games of its generation, and one that will also serve players who never finished the first game. Toward the end, the game leans somewhat more toward open action and eases off on the oppressiveness, which suits some players and bothers others, though the overall pacing remains balanced. Anyone wanting a tougher ride can turn to the highest difficulty, where resources become even scarcer and mistakes are unforgiving.
