SSX On Tour
SSX On Tour, the fourth installment of the arcade snowboarding series, added a brand-new element in the form of skiing alongside the traditional board disciplines, letting players choose for the first time between a snowboard and skis with different handling and riding styles, which expanded the tactical options when picking a riding style. The game left behind the fictional mountains of previous installments and set its races on more realistically styled, though still over-the-top, mountains around the world, tied together by a music-tour theme in which riders travel between locations like rock bands on a concert circuit.
The most striking change was the visual stylization, which abandoned Tricky's neon futuristic aesthetic in favor of a rough, hand-drawn sketchbook look in the spirit of punk poster art, with scribbled lettering and drawings right in the user interface. The player also created their own character and worked their way up from a nobody to a star, moving the series closer to the career model of the skateboarding games of the time. The soundtrack was assembled in cooperation with specific musicians and bands, who also appeared as playable characters alongside the traditional series roster, further strengthening the connection between music and gaming culture characteristic of the entire SSX series.
The trick system and Tricky mode remained the core of the gameplay, supplemented by new acrobatic combinations and interactive track elements, such as a crowd reacting to riders' performances. The visuals faithfully captured the series' energetic, colorful aesthetic, though some reviews pointed to a certain repetitiveness compared to the high point that was Tricky. Interestingly, the GameCube version offered Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach as playable characters. Although On Tour never reached the cult status of its predecessor, it remains a beloved and entertaining conclusion to the arcade snowboarding series on PlayStation 2 before its long hiatus.
