Space Channel 5: Part 2
Space Channel 5: Part 2 is the sequel to the cult rhythm game by Tetsuya Mizuguchi and studio United Game Artists, arriving on the PlayStation 2 after the first entry was released on the Sega Dreamcast. The player once again steps into the role of reporter Ulala, who uses "repeat after me" dance battles to free the galaxy's inhabitants from captivity by alien invaders — the player watches a sequence of movement and sound cues and must repeat them in the correct rhythm using the controller in order to win the dance duel and win over another ally.
The game's visual style draws on the pop-art aesthetic of the sixties and seventies, with bold colors, stylized characters, and fluid animation that still makes it one of the most visually distinctive titles on the console today. Music is central to Space Channel 5 — funk- and disco-inspired tracks accompany every battle and are tied so closely to the gameplay that the music essentially dictates the very rhythm of play as well as its visual accompaniment. The second entry also expands the cast of characters and delivers a more elaborate, more cinematically told story with more prominent supporting characters.
Although Space Channel 5: Part 2 never achieved mass commercial success, it built a reputation among critics and rhythm game fans alike as a cult classic with a unique visual signature and an infectious soundtrack. Today the game is valued as one of the most distinctive music titles of the PlayStation 2 generation and proof that the rhythm game genre can work outside the established guitar and dance formats. Its art style also foreshadowed the later work of its creator, who would go on to become known for other music-driven projects built on fusing music and gameplay into a single inseparable whole. Fans still remember the series today as one of the most distinctive examples of how music and gameplay can be merged into a single inseparable experience.
Why play it: For rhythm game fans looking for something outside the guitar and dance formats, it offers a cult classic with a unique visual signature and an infectious soundtrack, even though it remained a commercial niche.
