The third entry in the series moves the action to 1920s America with a detective who summons demons.

Shadow Hearts: From the New World from 2006 is the third installment in the series, moving the story from Europe to 1920s America and introducing a new protagonist, Johnny Garland, a private detective with the ability to summon demons, searching for traces of his own destiny across the continent. The story loosely continues from the previous entries but is designed to be understandable to new players without knowledge of earlier events, blending historical settings with supernatural elements and the series' distinctive, often bizarre humor.

A defining feature remains the Judgment Ring combat system — a circular gauge on which the player must hit timed button presses within specific zones for successful attacks or defense, giving otherwise turn-based combat a dynamic feel that demands reflexes rather than mere patient waiting for one's turn. The game further develops the collecting and upgrading of characters' demonic forms, along with a rich cast of eccentric side characters and companions with their own distinctive looks who accompany the party across the entire continent.

At the time, the game was praised for its distinctive humor, its blend of genres (western, horror, mythology), and its faithfulness to the signature Judgment Ring mechanic, though by the end of the PS2 generation its graphics no longer looked top-tier compared to newer competition on the market. For fans of the series, it's a dignified and playful conclusion to the trilogy, and it remains among the titles that, thanks to their distinctive style and dark humor, found a loyal and devoted audience worldwide. The soundtrack combines jazz and swing motifs typical of 1920s America with more mysterious melodies accompanying battles against demons and supernatural forces. Collecting and combining so-called Malice Stones further expands the options for customizing characters and their abilities to suit the player's preferred playstyle.

Why play it: For a distinctive blend of western, horror, and mythology paired with the faithful Judgment Ring mechanic — a dignified and playful conclusion to the trilogy with dark humor still praised today.
