An ambitious military shooter that the media hyped as a rival to Halo. In humanity's war against the Helghast army you live through raw, ponderously realistic firefights with an emphasis on atmosphere and the grimy aesthetic of war. Several playable characters and enemies with a strong identity give the story depth. The dark visuals and wartime hopelessness create a unique mood. The iconic Helghast became the face of the brand. Despite the PS2's technical limitations, it offered a harsh experience and launched an important Sony franchise.
