A fast three-on-three team fighting game with assists; an ace of the Vita's launch lineup.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was one of the strongest weapons in the PlayStation Vita launch lineup and still stands as proof of how well a handheld can handle a fast team fighter. Battles are fought in three-on-three teams, with characters swapping on the fly, chaining attacks together and covering each other with assists. The roster mixes heroes and villains from the Marvel comic universe with icons of Capcom's gaming history, from Ryu and Dante to Morrigan, creating matchups that would make no sense anywhere else. The pace is extremely fast, the screen is often flooded with effects, and a single well-timed hit can turn an entire match around, turning every bout into a small drama.

The Vita port kept a surprising amount of fidelity. The art style, inspired by comic panels and inked linework, remains legible even on a smaller screen, animation runs smoothly, and button controls stay precise. A new touch mode let players trigger special attacks directly with a finger on the screen, so even an inexperienced player could enjoy flashy combo strings without having to practice complex inputs. The game was rounded out with an online mode and the option to train against a dummy anytime between matches.

At the time it was received very well, often noted as one of the best reasons to own the console. Players praised the near-complete content parity with the home versions, including the expanded roster and adjusted balance. The Marvel vs. Capcom series shaped the entire team-fighter genre with its emphasis on fast character switching and aggressive pacing, and this portable version remains one of the best ways to play it on the go. It stays fun even after all these years, whether you're playing a few matches against the CPU or trying to grasp the depths of team combos. An energetic soundtrack and over-the-top presentation keep the feel of a grand comic-book showdown alive from the first second to the last.
