Jak and Daxter Collection

Plošinovka 2013 Mass Media Jak and Daxter ⏱ Very long · 30+ h

A trio of adventures that shift from a colorful platformer into a darker open world.

Jak and Daxter Collection brings together on PS Vita the first three adventures of the boy Jak and his wisecracking friend, who turns into a small weasel-like creature right at the start of the first game. The trilogy is interesting for how significantly it changed over time. The opening title, The Precursor Legacy, is a colorful platformer full of collecting, jumping, and open-ended nooks without a single loading screen. The second game shifted the series into a darker city ruled by an authoritarian regime and added firearms, hoverboard riding, and a noticeably higher difficulty. The third installment expanded the space with desert plains and combat vehicles.

The gameplay is a showcase of craftsmanship from the twilight of the PlayStation 2 era. Movement is fluid, the jump has weight, and the levels are built to reward curiosity. Alongside the main storyline you collect energy cells, complete timed challenges, and run into minigames that change up the pace. The second and third games add a mission structure with regular returns to a hub and gradual unlocking of new abilities and equipment. On Vita, the collection uses touch controls only marginally, and its main asset is the ability to have the entire trilogy in your bag at any time. The technical execution of the port drew some criticism at launch, since the frame rate occasionally wavered, which is noticeable in a game built around precise jumps.

The atmosphere still feels fresh after all these years. The world feels lived-in, the humor rests mainly on Daxter's one-liners, and the musical score moves between adventurous orchestral pieces and more rhythmic themes for the urban areas. The trilogy ranks among the best work Naughty Dog produced before moving on to its later action series, and alongside other titles of its time it helped shape the form of the three-dimensional platformer. Today, the first two games remain the collection's strongest argument, while the shift toward action in the second entry will test the patience of players who came for the platforming.
