F1 2011
F1 2011 was the first attempt to bring a full-fledged Formula 1 simulator to a handheld console, complete with all the licensed drivers, teams, and circuits of that season's championship on PlayStation Vita. The game offered a complete career across the championship, practice sessions, qualifying, and races with adjustable length, so everyone could choose whether they wanted a sprint of a few laps or a proper full race weekend. It also included the rules of the time, namely the movable rear wing for overtaking and a temporary power boost system, which required thinking about when to let a rival get closer and when to strike instead.
The driving model is adjustable across a wide range, from heavy assists that make the game feel like a brisk arcade racer, to a no-assist mode where you must respect braking points and tire temperature. Tire management and pit stop strategy form the core of the longer races, since rain can turn the running order upside down. Technically, the game was an impressive showcase at the console's launch, the circuits are well recognizable, and the interface stays readable even on the smaller screen, though with some concessions in trackside detail. The career mode also includes a bit of rivalry within the team, since the game tracks how the player performs against their own teammate, and better results open the door to offers from stronger outfits, which gives meaning to individual race weekends even when you're not fighting for the front of the pack.
Contemporary reception was mildly positive. Reviewers particularly praised the fact that this was a genuinely substantial game rather than a simplified spin-off, and praised the ability to drive a whole season anywhere. Criticism was aimed at the controls on the small sticks, which demand a finesse the handheld's hardware only offers to a limited degree, and at occasionally uneven frame rate. Today, F1 2011 is interesting mainly as a period document of a season that can be relived, and as proof that the Vita could handle genres you wouldn't expect from a handheld console.
