Code: Realize Guardian of Rebirth
Code: Realize Guardian of Rebirth sets a romance visual novel in a steampunk London hiding a girl with poison in her body: anything she touches disintegrates. That's why she lives in seclusion until a band of adventurers drawn from classic adventure literature comes to fetch her, among them a gentleman thief and an inventor. The result is an unusual blend of romance, conspiracy, and the story of someone who, for the first time in her life, is allowed to touch another person, even if only through gloves.
The gameplay is purely novel-based: long passages of text, illustrated scenes, and decision points that determine which character the heroine grows close to and how her own storyline unfolds. The game has six main routes, and they genuinely differ from one another, with some fundamentally changing the perspective on what lies behind the plot. The recommended order isn't mandatory, but it rewards patient players, since the final route pieces together information scattered across the others. Alongside the romance there's a surprisingly solid adventure line with intrigue and the question of what society allows itself to do to inconvenient people. The decision points are clearly marked, and the game lets you quickly jump back to earlier choices, so going through all the routes never feels like a chore but a natural part of progression. Besides the main routes, there's also a collection of short side vignettes.
On PlayStation Vita the game looks very good. The drawn portraits and illustrations are detailed, the color palette works with muted brass and purple tones, and they stand out beautifully on the sharp display. The Japanese voice acting is complete, and the music alternates orchestral motifs with more intimate pieces that support the quieter scenes well. The title was among those that helped establish otome novels in the Western market, where they had been a niche affair until then, and reviewers praised it precisely because, alongside the romance, it offers a genuinely well-built story. Today it's recommended even to those who never had any interest in the genre.
