Atelier Rorona Plus: The Alchemist of Arland

JRPG 2014 Gust ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h

The alchemist Rorona handles ordinary commissions instead of saving the world; the first part of Gust's trilogy.

Atelier Rorona Plus: The Alchemist of Arland brought the first entry in Gust's Arland trilogy to PlayStation Vita in a reworked form with new graphics and improved systems. The titular Rorona inherits an alchemy workshop from her teacher, only for the kingdom to immediately hand her an ultimatum: if she doesn't complete a series of assigned commissions within three years, the workshop will be shut down. So instead of saving the world, you handle fairly ordinary concerns — supplying the town with medicine, baking a cake for the queen, gathering materials, and trying not to go broke in the process.

The game is built on three interlinked activities. You gather materials at surrounding locations, synthesize items from them following recipes where the quality and properties of the ingredients genuinely matter, and all the while keep an eye on the calendar, since every action consumes days. Battles are turn-based and mainly serve as a way to get better materials. You recruit townsfolk into your party, and their goodwill grows depending on how you treat them and how much time you spend with them. There are several endings, and they hinge precisely on these relationships and on how well you handled your commissions. The workshop itself offers plenty of small optimizations, since a higher-quality intermediate product feeds into the final item's properties, and an experienced player can squeeze far more out of the same raw materials.

The Plus version added new characters, difficulty levels, costumes, and the option to keep playing after finishing the main story, and above all it adjusted the pacing, which felt rushed in the original release. The visuals are pastel, relaxed, and pleasantly unconfrontational, while the music leans on light acoustic and jazz motifs that make Atelier one of the most soothing series in the genre. Critics praised the depth of the alchemy system and the charming atmosphere, with reservations aimed at the time limit, which won't suit everyone. On Vita, it's a model game for evening play sessions when you don't want tension, just a well-designed system you can keep optimizing endlessly.
