A paper-flat dog learning to rap for love; the grandfather of the rhythm genre.

„I gotta believe!“ – this line burrowed into the memory of an entire generation of players and became the unofficial motto of a genre that PaRappa the Rapper practically helped invent. The adorable paper-flat pup who learns to rap in order to win over the girl of his dreams is today rightly considered one of the grandfathers of the whole rhythm gaming scene.

The gameplay principle is ingeniously simple: a sequence of buttons runs across the screen, which you have to press in rhythm as your teacher demonstrates them to you, whether it is a karate dog in the dojo, a frog at the flea market or a chicken in the kitchen. Your goal is to repeat their rap part as faithfully as possible. The game rates your accuracy, and based on it the mood of the track and the rating change from „awful“ to „cool“. When you get on the wave and start improvising, the game rewards you and the song literally comes alive.

The visual side is unmistakable: flat, paper characters in a vibrantly colored world created by illustrator Rodney Greenblat gave the game such a distinctive look that it burns into memory instantly. Together with catchy, professionally written rap tracks, a whole emerged that feels fresh and infectiously cheerful even after many years.

Culturally, PaRappa's significance is hard to overstate. It opened the door to the rhythm genre, which later blossomed into forms like Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero or Rock Band. It showed that music and timing can carry an entire game on their own and that cuteness and style are full-fledged gaming values. The creative duo led by Masaya Matsuura thereby steered an entire branch of the gaming industry.

PaRappa remains an icon of the early PlayStation era, a symbol of the time when Sony could afford to release bold and original ideas that had no equal in anything. To this day it is a title that can coax a smile onto your face and set your foot tapping.

Why play: A founding legend of the rhythm genre with irresistible style and catchy songs, a joy that ages gracefully.
