Farming simulation, a beloved entry in the series outside North America; a farm inherited from grandfather.

Harvest Moon: Back to Nature is a farming simulation from Victor Interactive Software, released on PlayStation in 1999, which became one of the most beloved entries in the entire series outside North America. The player takes over a dilapidated farm left behind by a deceased grandfather and must, across the seasons, gradually turn it into a thriving operation – sowing fields, raising animals, fishing, and mining resources in the local mines, while gradually reinvesting the earnings into expanding the farm, buying better tools, and building new outbuildings for the animals.

The game develops the series' classic formula with a smoother 3D village that can be freely explored, and an expanded system of relationships with the residents, including the option to court one of several characters and eventually marry. The daily farming routine is tied to the real passage of time, the changing of the seasons, and festivals that liven up the village and give the player a reason to return each in-game year, whether for growing and fishing competitions or seasonal celebrations with music and fireworks. This carefully balanced cycle of work, rest, and relationship-building, complemented by caring for pets, helping neighbors, and giving small gifts to villagers, is still considered the core of the whole series.

Visually the game relies on simple, cozy graphics and a colorful, pastel world that, together with its calm music, creates an unmistakably soothing atmosphere. It received a warm reception in Europe and Japan, while it never officially reached North America, and for many players it still serves as a nostalgic entry point into the farming-simulation genre, which continues to influence modern farming and relationship-building games. Even years later, Back to Nature remains valued for its honest, unhurried pace, which later entries in the series have struggled to surpass.

Why play it: For players craving calm, unhurried farming in a cozy pastel world whose pace later entries in the series struggled to surpass, even though it was only ever released unofficially in North America.
