Alundra
Alundra is an action-adventure with strong RPG and puzzle elements that acknowledges its debt to games like The Legend of Zelda, but does so in its own way, with a surprisingly dark story full of existential questions. The player controls a young man named Alundra, who is able to enter the dreams of the residents of the village of Inoa and resolve their nightmares in order to save their souls and the village itself from the ruin brought by a mysterious cult worshipping an ancient evil. Each dream functions as a separate, carefully designed dungeon full of ingenious puzzles based on physics, timing, and environmental manipulation, where a single wrong move often means death and a forced restart from the last save point.
The game excels through precise level design, where nearly every room hides a logical challenge requiring a combination of items, switches, and platforming skills, placing it among the best puzzle adventures of the entire 1990s console generation. The story is also unafraid of serious topics such as religious fanaticism, grief, suicide, or loss, which makes it feel more mature than most of its genre peers on the same console. Visually, the game relied on detailed 2D sprites and atmospheric music that underscored its gloomier narrative tone, contrasting with the colorful, at-first-glance fairy-tale-like stylization of the world and its inhabitants.
Alundra was received very positively by critics, and many reviewers praised both its difficulty and the ingenuity of its puzzles, though commercial success largely eluded it, as it launched at a time when the attention of both players and publishers was shifting toward fully 3D titles. Today it is considered one of the best-designed action-adventures on PlayStation, and fans of the genre still recommend it as essential playing for anyone who enjoys thoughtful level design and puzzles that reward patience and careful observation of the surroundings.
