Survival horror meets turn-based RPG in a Welsh monastery full of ghosts.

Koudelka is an unusual combination of survival horror and turn-based RPG set in a mysterious Welsh monastery full of ghosts and dark secrets hidden within its walls for centuries. The player takes control of the title heroine, clairvoyant Koudelka Iasant, who along with two other characters sets out to uncover the source of the evil hidden within the walls of Nemeton Monastery and its connection to the place's bloody past and the fates of its ancient inhabitants. The game's setting draws on Gothic architecture and European mythology, setting it apart from the predominantly Japanese fantasy style of other JRPGs on the platform and lending it an unusually grim, historicizing tone close to Gothic horror.

Exploration of the monastery uses the fixed camera angles typical of survival horrors of the era, while battles suddenly switch to a turn-based system played out on a grid battlefield, similar to tactical RPGs. This blend of two seemingly incompatible genres made Koudelka a unique experiment, one that later inspired the follow-up Shadow Hearts series from the same creative team at Sacnoth. The atmosphere was rounded out by grim music and an emphasis on tension rather than action, with puzzles requiring careful exploration of the environment and reading period texts scattered throughout the monastery.

At release, Koudelka didn't achieve wide commercial success, partly due to its unusual genre combination and the fairly high difficulty of its battles, but critics praised the originality of its concept, its atmosphere, and its courage to break away from established genre templates. Today it's seen as a cult title and an important predecessor to later games that more successfully combined horror atmosphere with RPG mechanics and a European-flavored setting, and fans still discover it today thanks to its connection to the Shadow Hearts series and its unconventional story.

Why play it: For its unconventional blend of horror atmosphere and RPG mechanics in a European-flavored setting — despite the higher difficulty of its battles, it's a fascinating cult predecessor to the Shadow Hearts series.
