A minimalist roguelite where the character attacks automatically and the player just dodges hordes of enemies.

Vampire Survivors is a minimalist action roguelite in which the character automatically attacks hordes of enemies while the player focuses solely on movement and dodging within an ever-thickening crowd of monsters. As time passes, the player gathers experience and picks new weapons and passive upgrades, whose combinations and synergies gradually turn the screen into a chaotic spray of effects capable of wiping out entire crowds of enemies within minutes.

The core of the gameplay is simple controls combined with a deep build system – the right combination of weapons and their evolution into more powerful forms can fundamentally change the course of a run, and experimenting with different characters and combinations is one of the main reasons players keep returning to the same maps again and again. Visually, the game relies on deliberately simple, pixel-art graphics evoking games from the nineties, which only heightens the contrast with the enormous number of effects and enemies flooding the screen in the later stages of a run.

Each map offers a different terrain layout, secret areas, and its own set of enemies and bosses, and as the player progresses they unlock new playable characters, each with different starting weapons and passive bonuses, which significantly extends both the length of a single run and the game's overall replayability. Following the base game's success, paid expansions were released, adding new maps, characters, and weapon evolutions.

Vampire Survivors started as a one-developer project and became an unexpected phenomenon that, thanks to its low price, extremely addictive loop, and regular updates, quickly gathered a massive player base. The game is now considered the founding and most influential title of the entire genre, which was named "survivors-like" after it, and it has inspired dozens of imitators and its own spin-offs. Its success is often cited as an example of how a simple, well-tuned game idea can outshine even much more expensive productions.

Why play: The founding title of the entire survivors-like genre proves how a simple, well-tuned idea with an addictive loop can outshine even much more expensive productions.
