StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

Realtimová strategie 2010 Blizzard Entertainment ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h ⭐ Must-play

A careful modernization of one of the most respected titles in the genre's history.

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty arrived after a long wait, carrying the weight of one of the most respected titles in the genre's history. Even so, it chose a path of careful modernization: the three factions - Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss - remained unmistakably distinct, the mineral-and-gas economy stayed unchanged, and the emphasis is still on precise unit control, map awareness, and attack timing. New units, however, shook up established habits, whether it's Terran mechs transforming into siege tanks or the Protoss ability to warp entire squads in from a distance.

The campaign offers something rare in the genre. Between missions you walk around the ship Hyperion, talk to the crew, spend rewards on unit upgrades, and choose which contract to take, giving a sense of agency even off the battlefield. Individual missions almost never repeat themselves: one moment you're fleeing rising lava, the next you're gathering resources only at night, when the hordes retreat. Technically it's an exceptionally polished game that ran smoothly even on then-average machines, and its interface is among the clearest in the entire genre. The music mixes western guitars with orchestral and cold electronic motifs depending on whether you're in a story segment or in combat.

The game immediately became a pillar of competitive play and, together with the elaborate Battle.net ladder, redefined what an online strategy game should look like: automatic matchmaking by skill level, leagues, and broadcasts of tournament matches. The story continued in the expansions Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void, which finished telling the fates of the remaining races. Today the base game is available for free and remains perhaps the best entry point into classic real-time strategy: tough, fast, and unforgiving, but with superbly guided training and a campaign forgiving enough for beginners.
