It stood at the birth of the battle royale genre; a hundred players, a shrinking zone, chicken dinner at the end.

PUBG: Battlegrounds, originally released under the name PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, stood at the birth of the battle royale genre in the form the entire gaming industry knows it today. Up to a hundred players parachute onto a vast island, gather weapons and gear, and fight to survive while the playable area gradually shrinks due to a deadly blue zone, which forces players closer together and intensifies fights toward the end of the match. The game can be played solo or in teams, and the last survivor or surviving team is rewarded with a chicken dinner as a symbolic prize for victory.

The game was built on Unreal Engine 4 and, compared to earlier, more arcade-like shooters, emphasized more realistic ballistics, bullet drop over distance, and tactical use of terrain and cover. Vast maps like Erangel offered great variety in approach — from aggressively looting towns to cautiously waiting at the edge of the zone — which made every match a different experience. The sound design heightened the tension further, with distant gunshots and footsteps providing crucial information about other players' movement across the map.

PUBG kicked off a wave of battle royale games that fundamentally transformed the entire gaming market and inspired titles like Fortnite and Apex Legends. Its competitive scene includes tournaments like the PUBG Global Championship, where spectator readability is helped by an overview of remaining players and zones on the minimap along with commentators tracking key fights. Even years later, PUBG is remembered as the game that popularized the battle royale genre and defined the basic rules on which most of its successors still stand today.

The game grew out of community mods that made its creator Brendan Greene famous even before PUBG itself, and it carried the idea of tense survival with limited resources and an ever-shrinking space into a full-fledged title. Although the game was later overtaken on the market by competing titles with a faster pace and a more arcade-like approach, PUBG kept its reputation as the more realistic and rawer alternative, one that emphasizes patience, reading the terrain, and careful decision-making in the critical moments of a match.

Why play: For fans of tense survival with limited resources, it's a rawer and more realistic alternative to faster, more arcade-like battle royale competitors, emphasizing patience and careful decision-making.
