Portal
Portal is a short but tremendously influential first-person game in which the player uses a gun that creates connected portals to solve spatial puzzles in the test chambers of the mysterious Aperture Science laboratory. The main driving force of the story is the artificial intelligence GLaDOS, whose dry, passive-aggressive humor comments on the player's progress and gradually reveals a darker truth about the facility and the experiment itself, into which the player character, Chell, has been drawn without any way to leave.
Gameplay built purely on the mechanic of two portals – an entrance and an exit – managed to squeeze dozens of elegantly escalating puzzles out of this simple principle, gradually introducing new elements such as energy balls carrying momentum, moving platforms, or dangerous turrets with a mechanical voice. The visually sparse, clean laboratory environment, combined with minimalist ambient sound and, finally, the iconic closing song Still Alive, created a distinctive atmosphere that has stayed with players to this day. The game was released as part of The Orange Box bundle alongside Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2, which initially somewhat overshadowed it, yet thanks to word of mouth it quickly earned cult status and became the most talked-about part of the entire bundle.
Critics and players alike received the game exceptionally well, praising above all its elegant design, the precise pacing of revealing new mechanics, and its clever, economical script despite the short playtime. Portal influenced the entire spatial puzzle genre and led to the larger and still more successful sequel Portal 2, while the original remains, to this day, a textbook example of how one well-crafted idea can produce an unforgettable experience. Even years later, Portal is routinely cited as an example of what elegant game design should look like, where no mechanic or line of dialogue feels wasted.
Why play it: For anyone who wants to experience a textbook example of elegant game design, where no mechanic or line of dialogue feels wasted, Portal is a must-play despite its short length.
