Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

Akcni FPS 2002 2015, Inc. Medal of Honor ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h ⭐ Must-play

War from a soldier's point of view, from Normandy across Europe; cinematic storytelling instead of a bare-bones simulation.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is a war shooter that throws the player into the role of an American soldier fighting on key fronts of the Second World War, from the landing at Normandy through the North African desert to the trenches of occupied Europe. The game is built on linear missions full of scripted moments, where the player shoots their way through villages, bunkers, and fortified positions, with stealth passages, sabotage missions behind enemy lines, and defending positions against repeated waves of attacking enemies along the way. The weapon arsenal matches the standards of the period — rifles, submachine guns, grenades, and machine guns — and the game emphasizes the atmosphere of battlefield chaos and cinematic storytelling rather than a bare-bones military simulation.

Technically, the game ran on a modified version of the Quake III Arena engine, which allowed it to offer, for its time, impressive visuals with more open spaces, smoke effects, and dense action on screen, with dozens of enemies attacking the player at once. The sound design was among the best PC games had to offer at the time, with weighty gunfire and explosion sounds along with emotive orchestral music that heightened the pathos of the war scenes. The game's most famous and most-cited sequence remains the landing on Omaha Beach, which clearly drew inspiration from the film Saving Private Ryan and became a model for many later war games that tried to imitate a similar moment.

After release, the game received a very positive reception from both players and reviewers, who praised the cinematic direction, the intensity of the action, and the engaging, well-constructed campaign. Allied Assault is today considered one of the founding titles of the modern war-shooter genre and is associated with the beginnings of Infinity Ward, whose founders worked on the game before creating their own Call of Duty series. Even years later, the game works as an engaging and surprisingly dynamic campaign, though its technical execution and the rather basic enemy AI naturally bear clear marks of their time of origin.

Why play it: For players interested in the roots of the modern war-shooter genre, still driven today by a dynamic and cinematically directed campaign, even though the technology and enemy AI reveal their age.
