Lineage II
Lineage II was released by South Korean studio NCSoft in 2003 as a sequel to the earlier title Lineage, and it quickly became one of the most successful MMORPGs in Asia, from where it also spread to Western markets in localized versions. The game built on a classic fantasy foundation with races and classes, but it was distinguished by an extraordinarily demanding and slow leveling progression that required players to invest a huge amount of time - at the time, it was among the most grind-heavy MMOs on the market, earning it a reputation as a game for dedicated, persistent players willing to spend long hours in it.
A central element of the game was the castle and territory system - player clans could capture and defend castles, collect taxes from other players in a given region, and wage large-scale battles against each other for control of territory. These mass clan battles, often involving dozens to hundreds of participants at once, were part of what earned Lineage II its reputation - politics and warfare between clans were just as important as individual character progression, and the reward came in the form of taxes and prestige. Visually, the game looked advanced at the time of release thanks to its use of the Unreal Engine, which gave it a more three-dimensional and atmospheric environment than many contemporaries built on older technology.
Lineage II influenced the direction of the Korean MMO industry and showed how powerfully a system of clan politics and territorial wars could function as a driving force for long-term play, beyond the traditional quest structure that many Western competitors relied on. The game remained active for many years and, in various regional versions and expansions, is still operated today, albeit with a significantly smaller player base than at the peak of its popularity in the mid-2000s, and it is still mentioned as one of the titles that most significantly shaped the Korean approach to the MMORPG genre.
Why play it: For players who love clan politics and territorial wars as a driving force for play more than traditional quests - a title that significantly shaped the Korean approach to MMORPGs and still runs today in various versions.
