A tactical RPG about expeditions into dark dungeons; heroes battle stress and madness as well as monsters.

Darkest Dungeon is a turn-based RPG about leading a party of mercenaries into the dark catacombs beneath an ancestral estate the player's ancestor inherited after his reckless search for forbidden knowledge unleashed horror upon the world. Besides classic combat with unit positioning and health management, the game introduces a system of stress and mental health — heroes facing the horrors of the dark can succumb to panic, paranoia, or, conversely, morbid courage, which fundamentally affects their behavior both in and out of combat.

Between expeditions, the player manages a growing town, where heroes heal their wounds, relieve stress at the tavern or church, and upgrade their abilities and equipment. The game is deliberately merciless — heroes can die permanently, acquire permanent negative traits, or quit in resignation, and the player must learn both when to take risks and when to retreat. Visually, the game is defined by a striking hand-drawn gothic style inspired by the illustrations of Mike Mignola, complemented by a chilling narrator's commentary that underscores the atmosphere of hopelessness and psychological decay.

An integral part of the experience is also the deep, dramatic narrator's voice, which comments on nearly every action in and out of combat, lending even minor failures the stamp of a fated tragedy. Heroes furthermore suffer from phobias, addictions, or quirks that surface precisely at moments of greatest pressure, so assembling a balanced expedition party becomes just as important as the tactics of combat itself.

Darkest Dungeon launched following a successful Kickstarter campaign and quickly earned a reputation as one of the most demanding and atmospheric RPGs of its time. Critics praised its unique stress system, its art style, and its risk-reward design, which forces the player to constantly balance caution against ambition. The game had a significant influence on the tactical RPG genre and inspired a number of successors built on a similar concept of heroes' psychological attrition, and it remains a reference point today for games with a dark, gothic atmosphere.

Why play: For players seeking a demanding tactical RPG with a dark gothic atmosphere and a unique system of psychological stress that forces constant balancing of caution against ambition.
