A revolutionary focus on characters and dynasties instead of just managing territory and borders.

Crusader Kings II from 2012 turned the logic of grand strategy on its head – instead of the abstract management of territory, it places at the center of the game a specific ruler, their dynasty, relationships, intrigue, and legacy. The player thus doesn't just run a state, but lives out the fates of individual rulers from the Middle Ages onward, dealing with marriages, plots, succession, and personal traits that affect how well or poorly the character can rule – a capable but cruel ruler can lead the country differently than a pious weakling in the same position, and after their death the game continues with their heir, whether the player likes it or not.

This emphasis on characters rather than just the map and numbers made Crusader Kings II one of the most distinctive titles in the genre and inspired other Paradox games that followed it. After release, the studio supported it for many years with an extensive line of expansions and smaller add-ons that gradually added new regions, religious mechanics, and game systems such as republics or nomadic empires, making the base game together with its add-ons one of the most extensive titles in the whole company in terms of both paid and free content.

The amount of DLC also means that the price for the full experience today significantly exceeds the price of the base game, which is a common complaint among new players coming to the series for the first time and not knowing which expansions they actually need. Even so, Crusader Kings II remains popular among part of the fanbase even after the release of the third game in 2020, partly thanks to the mature and well-polished form the game eventually achieved after years of gradual updates, which a newcomer will appreciate just as much as a series veteran.

Why play it: Ideal for players who want a grand strategy built on the stories of specific characters and their intrigues, not just the management of provinces and armies.
