Closes out the trilogy around Soap MacTavish and Captain Price with a fast, cinematic pace.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 closed out the trilogy centered on Soap MacTavish and Captain Price, bringing to a close the global conflict begun in the previous Modern Warfare titles. The game takes players through major cities like New York, London, and Paris, where large-scale military clashes unfold between the Russian army and allied forces while the world teeters on the brink of all-out war. The narrative keeps the series' signature style of fast cuts between different acts and characters, which lets the conflict be shown from multiple angles and keeps the pace high throughout the relatively short but intense campaign.

The new studio Sledgehammer Games contributed more significantly to development for the first time alongside Infinity Ward, leading to an even greater emphasis on cinematically directed sequences and striking scenery of ravaged European and American cities. Gameplay-wise, the game stays true to the series' established FPS formula of linear levels, scripted moments, and intense firefights, occasionally broken up by short driving or flying sequences over the battlefield. Multiplayer introduced the Strike Packages point-reward system in place of classic killstreaks and further developed the competitive side, which at the time was among the most-played online experiences of all, drawing in millions of players worldwide.

Technically, the PC version ran on a proven engine similar to previous entries, offering smooth performance even on then-common configurations without requiring expensive upgrades. Reception at the time was very positive, mainly thanks to the combination of familiar, tried-and-true gameplay and the grandeur of the trilogy's conclusion, though critical voices pointed out a certain repetitiveness compared to earlier entries in the series. Today, Modern Warfare 3 is regarded primarily as a fitting conclusion to one of the most significant storylines in the entire Call of Duty series, one that defined modern military shooters for years to come and influenced numerous other games in the genre.

Why play: For series fans looking for a fitting conclusion to one of Call of Duty's most significant storylines, even though the gameplay repeats the tried-and-true formulas of previous entries in places.
