Assetto Corsa
Assetto Corsa is a racing simulator from an Italian studio that quickly became a benchmark among PC players with a wheel after release. The game has no career built around a big story or racing spectacle; its core is the most faithful possible driving model, precisely scanned tracks, and the ability to customize practically anything. The roster includes both road and race cars, from small hatchbacks to formula and GT machines, and tracks that were laser-scanned to match real-world bumps and gradients. The main activity is driving against the clock, chasing the ideal line, and gradually mastering individual circuits.
The driving model is uncompromising. Tires have a noticeable operating temperature window, weight transfer under braking is pronounced, and a car loses grip exactly the way it would in reality; an axle that starts to slide won't wait for you. Steering wheel force feedback is among the cleanest in the genre, and a lot of information about lateral slip reaches the player directly through their hands, so you drive by feel rather than by gauges. On top of that there's detailed gearing, tire pressure, stiffness, and downforce setup, telemetry, and the ability to play with either a wheel or a gamepad, though the former is clearly the game's home turf.
Graphically, the game wasn't cutting-edge at release, but it ran smoothly and offered a stable image even in VR, which extended its lifespan considerably. Engine sound is honest, and driving without music, with only the crackle of the exhaust and the wail of tires, is where the experience is strongest. Its greatest strength, however, is the modding community, which added a massive number of tracks, cars, and visual overhauls to Assetto Corsa, pushing the game far beyond its original form. That's exactly why, years later and despite newer entries, it remains one of the most played simulators on PC. Entry is tough for a beginner, and without a wheel much of its quality is lost, but for anyone willing to put in the setup work and truly learn one track, the experience is closer to reality than any arcade racing game.
