Space Invaders Extreme
Space Invaders Extreme is a modern reimagining of the original arcade phenomenon Space Invaders by Taito, which on the Nintendo DS combines the classic shooting down of rows of alien invaders with new gameplay mechanics and a strikingly stylized audiovisual presentation. The player controls a cannon moving along the bottom of the screen and aims at descending formations of invaders, while the game adds special colored enemies, a combo system, and bonuses activated by collecting certain color combinations, turning a simple concept into a surprisingly strategic affair.
On DS, the game used the lower touchscreen to display score, power-ups, and bonus effects, while the actual shooting took place on the upper display with smooth animation and striking neon effects inspired by music visualizations. A key part of the experience is the music, which reacts to what's happening on screen and changes rhythm according to the intensity of the firefight — the electronic soundtrack was one of the most praised elements of the whole game and gave the otherwise simple arcade action an almost dance-rhythmic feel.
Space Invaders Extreme received very positive reviews at launch as one of the most successful attempts to revive a classic arcade franchise for a modern audience, and it also received ports to the PSP and other platforms. The game showed that even a concept more than thirty years old can still appeal to players with a well-thought-out modernization of its mechanics and audiovisual style, thanks in part to score leaderboards and unlockable bonus modes that extend the gameplay beyond the short main campaign. To this day, the title is considered one of the best modern shoot 'em ups on the Nintendo DS thanks to its addictive gameplay, distinctive visual style, and soundtrack, which became an integral part of the experience and influenced other games in the genre that tried to connect music with the dynamics of firefights.
