Retro Game Challenge
Retro Game Challenge is an unusual simulation game from studio Indieszero that came out for the Nintendo DS in 2009 as a localization of the Japanese series Game Center CX. The player finds themselves trapped in the 1980s and must complete challenges set by a mysterious "game master" by playing a series of fictional but faithfully imitated games in the style of the 8-bit consoles of the time - from platformers and space shooters to racing games and baseball simulations - gradually unlocking new titles, their more advanced versions, and gaming magazines full of period tips and tricks.
The charm of the game lies in the fact that the individual fictional games within Retro Game Challenge are themselves fully playable and deliberately mimic the period flaws and charm of the early gaming era, including simple graphics, chiptune music, short animations, and sometimes deliberately imperfect, harsh design. The framing story, with live-action footage and cartoonish humor, gives the whole thing a nostalgic, playful tone and references the culture of playing games in small shops, swapping tips among friends, and reading gaming magazines of the era that many players remember fondly. The game also works with the gradual unlocking of harder versions of the same fictional titles, so the player learns to handle them increasingly better, similar to real games of that time.
The game was received in the West as a pleasant surprise and a cult item for players with an attachment to gaming history, though it remained more of a niche title outside the mainstream of sales, and its humor was appreciated mainly by players who had themselves experienced the gaming era of the eighties and nineties. It's still valued today as a unique tribute to early gaming culture and an inventive way of reminding the Nintendo DS generation of the roots of the medium from which everything sprang, and of playing games that never actually existed yet feel completely authentic, with all the flaws and charm that those who remember the 1980s will recognize well.
