Kirby Super Star Ultra
Some games deserve a second life, and Kirby Super Star belongs among them exactly. The original Super Nintendo title from 1996 was prized as a collection of several standalone adventures in one package, a so-called game full of games. In 2008 HAL Laboratory and Nintendo brought it to the Nintendo DS under the name Kirby Super Star Ultra, in an enhanced form with new modes and a reworked presentation.
The concept stayed true to the original: instead of one long campaign, the game offers several shorter stories each with its own focus. One is a classic platformer, another a grand epic battle, yet another a race against time or a treasure hunt. This structure makes the game an ideal title for a handheld console, because you'll always find a bit for a few minutes as well as a longer expedition for the evening. The DS version added entirely new episodes that weren't in the original.
Kirby's main hallmark, namely the ability to swallow enemies and take over their powers, is developed here into a rich palette. Kirby transforms into a sword fighter, a fireball, an ice knight, and dozens of other forms. Super Star also became famous for its Helper system, where the player can create from an absorbed ability a helper controlled by a second player, so the whole game can be played cooperatively.
The DS remake replaced the original 2D graphics with sharper reworked sprites, redid the interludes, and added touch-controlled minigames using the bottom display. For veterans it was pleasant nostalgia in a better coat; for newcomers a comfortable gateway into one of the most beloved classics of the pink icon.
Kirby Super Star Ultra confirmed why the series is so loved: it's accessible even for the youngest players, yet hides enough content and playfulness to entertain seasoned veterans too. The variety of modes, cooperative play, and the characteristically lighthearted atmosphere make it one of the most rewarding platformer titles on the DS and proof that a good idea holds up across console generations.
Why play: An enhanced remake of the cult collection of many games in one, full of abilities, co-op, and new content. A varied and accessible platformer for everyone.
