Custom Robo Arena
Custom Robo Arena is a third-person action shooter in which the player builds and controls miniature combat robots called Custom Robo in arena battles on Nintendo DS. The game continues the earlier entries in the series, previously released in Japan and on Nintendo 64 and GameCube, and offers an extensive customization system where the player assembles a robot from a body, weapons, bombs, and movement modules, which fundamentally affects the fighting style — from quick dodges to heavy long-range artillery strikes.
Battles take place in enclosed arenas viewed from an isometric or slightly tilted perspective, where the player fires projectiles, dodges enemy attacks, and uses special abilities depending on the chosen robot configuration, giving the gameplay a depth similar to fighting games combined with shooter action. Nintendo DS allowed the game to offer online multiplayer via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which was a fairly ambitious feature for a handheld console at the time of release, and the touchscreen served as a clear customization menu.
Custom Robo Arena was praised for the depth of its customization system and its solid online support, although the series remained a niche affair outside Japan even with this installment, where it had a long tradition going back to the first entries on Nintendo's earlier consoles. The game still stands today as an interesting example of how the arena action shooter genre can be enriched with equipment-collecting and assembling elements similar to sports or RPG titles, and for Nintendo DS fans it remains one of the lesser-known but technically and mechanically well-crafted titles supporting online battles, deserving attention even years later, especially thanks to the sheer number of possible equipment combinations offering varied fighting styles ranging from aggressive close-range approaches to cautious long-range fire.
