Another Code: Two Memories
Another Code: Two Memories, released in North America as Trace Memory, is an adventure game by studio Cing that came out for the Nintendo DS in 2005 and was among the first titles to demonstrate the platform's unconventional use for a calm, narrative-driven genre. The player takes control of fourteen-year-old Ashley Robbins, who travels to a mysterious island with her uncle in search of her missing father, and with the help of a special device called the DAS, which records messages and voices from the past, gradually uncovers a family secret hidden in his old letters and records.
The game builds on classic adventure mechanics - exploring the environment, collecting items, and solving puzzles - but cleverly makes use of both DS screens and the touch display: the player pieces together torn papers, rotates objects in space, or writes their own notes directly on the bottom screen using the stylus, which was a refreshing and thoughtful use of the hardware at the time of release. The game's atmosphere is quiet and melancholic, with gentle, minimalist music underscoring themes of loss, solitude, and memory, and the story unfolds at a slow, deliberate pace without action elements or time pressure, letting the player set their own speed through the individual chapters and memories. The puzzle design also frequently relies on physically rotating the console or combining both screens, giving the narrative a tangible, almost book-like quality.
Although the game wasn't a commercial hit, it was critically praised for its originality, sensitive storytelling, and inventive use of the DS's technical capabilities, and later received a spiritual sequel, Another Code: R, on the Wii. Among adventure game fans, it is still remembered today as one of the most enjoyable and least-known titles of the early Nintendo DS era, one that showed the console could handle quiet, introspective stories and that the adventure genre could work in a completely different way on touch hardware than on a traditional computer.
