Sin and Punishment (fan překlad)

Run & gun / Shooter 2000 Treasure ⏱ Short · approx. 1–3 h

Treasure rail action; intense, long Japan-only.

There are games that reached Western audiences so late that they became legends before most players could even try them. Sin and Punishment is exactly such a case. This intense rail action title from studio Treasure long remained a Japanese exclusive and only received an official English release much later on the Virtual Console.

Studio Treasure built a reputation as masters of action games who never do things by halves. In Sin and Punishment they combine fluid shooting with character movement and swordplay into one relentless stream of adrenaline. You move along a predetermined track, but you control both the aiming and your own character at the same time, so you must simultaneously dodge, aim and deflect projectiles back at your enemies. It is a system that demands the player's full attention and rewards them with the feeling of total control over chaos.

On a technical level it was one of the most impressive titles in the entire Nintendo 64 library. Treasure squeezed a wealth of effects, fluid action and grandiose boss battles out of the console — battles that rank among the best the genre has offered. The cinematic story, full of peculiar atmosphere and drama, gave all that frenzy a framework that elevated it above a mere shooter.

The handling of pacing here is masterful. The game drives you forward, rarely lets you catch your breath and constantly changes the situations it throws you into. It is precisely this density of events that makes it an experience you can't simply put down. Every run through a level is a small test of reflexes and concentration, and every mastered boss feels like a genuine victory.

That is why Sin and Punishment became a cult treasure among action fans. For a long time it was more of a whispered legend than a playable game in the West, and those who did get to it treasured it all the more. It is proof that Treasure knew how to make action games that are as clever as they are fast.

Why play it: For the uncompromising, technically refined rail action from Treasure, which long ranked among the rarest treasures of the N64 library.
