Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition
Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition belongs to the series of remasters through which Beamdog brought Infinity Engine classics back to mobile phones in the mid-2010s. Unlike the politically and dialogue-heavy Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale builds from the first minutes on raw dungeon crawling: the player assembles a party of up to six adventurers and travels through the snowy region of Icewind Dale, where traps, hordes of monsters, and tactical battles await rather than branching intrigue and dialogue with dozens of characters.
Enhanced Edition added new content to the original 2000 game, reworked balancing, and above all controls tailored to touchscreens - the inventory, spellbook, and party formations can all be handled with gestures, combat remains real-time with the option to pause the game at any moment, issue orders to individual party members, and resume the action. The isometric camera and the density of information on screen - health bars, spell icons, the party roster - make playing on a small phone display more a matter for patient players; a tablet or a connected keyboard and mouse noticeably ease and clarify the controls.
The game works as a full-blooded tactical RPG following Dungeons & Dragons rules, but without the big story ambitions of its sibling Baldur's Gate - the strength lies in party building, managing resources, equipment, and spells, and in the battles themselves, not in unraveling a branching plot. It's clearly a genre pick for old-school CRPG fans who value depth of rules over storytelling.
Why play it: For players who want tough tactical combat and party building under D&D rules on mobile rather than a story experience - ideally with a connected keyboard, mouse, or on a tablet with a larger display.
