Tower defense with an anime aesthetic and surprisingly demanding unit-placement tactics.

Arknights looks at first glance like just another anime gacha title, but it's actually one of the few mobile tower defense games with real tactical depth that holds up next to the genre's established PC representatives. The player deploys so-called Operators onto a grid governed by terrain rules — some only work on the ground, others require elevated positions, still others block enemies in their path — and success depends on the correct deployment order and real-time use of abilities, not just the raw power of individual characters pulled from the gacha. Touch controls handle placement and activating special abilities clearly, though the tougher maps demand a good deal of upfront planning and often several attempts.

Made by studio Hypergryph and released in 2019, the game sets its story in the dark post-apocalyptic world of Terra, where a disease called Oripathy spreads corruption caused by the mineral Originium, and its more serious tone sets Arknights apart from lighter gacha competitors focused mainly on fanservice. It's precisely this combination of demanding strategy and darker storytelling that earned the game a reputation as a title taken seriously even by players who otherwise keep their distance from anime aesthetics and gacha mechanics, viewing them as shallow.

Monetization is built on drawing Operators for in-game currency that can also be purchased, but the gacha rates are considered relatively generous compared to the competition, and the game plays well even without spending thanks to well-designed farming.

Why play it: For tower defense fans who want a genuine tactical challenge and don't mind gacha characters as a wrapper around a solid strategy game.
