AFK Arena
AFK Arena turned the logic of the mobile RPG on its head: instead of requiring the player to constantly and actively play, progress continues even offline and rewards pile up until the player returns to collect them — hence the name, referencing the abbreviation "away from keyboard." Battles play out automatically between formations of heroes divided into factions with their own visual styles and synergies, so the player's main job is assembling a team and deciding who to power up, rather than manually controlling individual battles step by step. This approach makes the game an ideal candidate for short breaks rather than long, focused sessions in front of the screen.
Made by Chinese studio Lilith Games, the game launched in 2019 and quickly became famous even outside the gaming community thanks to a massive advertising campaign full of exaggerated gameplay demos, which made it one of the most recognizable mobile titles of its time purely based on visibility in social media and video ads. The actual game is calmer and less action-packed than the ads suggested, but the idle concept and collecting colorful heroes still found a loyal player base.
Monetization is gacha-based, with heroes drawn for in-game currency that can also be purchased, though compared to more aggressive competitors it tends to be seen as milder and less forced. The game is fully playable for free across the basic content and campaign progression.
Why play it: For players who want RPG progression without needing to spend hours in front of the screen every day, and don't mind that the main battles are more watched than played.
