Rolo to the Rescue
An elephant who is scared but sets out anyway to rescue his friends from the zoo. It sounds like a fairy tale, and Rolo to the Rescue looks exactly like one, except that beneath its cute coat it hides a surprisingly clever platformer.
Rolo to the Rescue is a platformer in which you play as a little elephant named Rolo on a journey to rescue his animal friends. The game came out on the SEGA Mega Drive and combines jumping action with light puzzle elements. At the core of the fun is a system whereby Rolo gradually frees and gains various animals, each with its own ability: the mouse squeezes through small openings, the mole digs through the ground, and other creatures help overcome specific obstacles.
This mechanic of switching animals gives the game freshness and forces the player to think about which one to deploy in a given situation. The levels are designed to reward exploration and clever use of abilities; it is not just about reaching the goal but about finding the right path and freeing as many friends as possible. Beneath its friendly surface, then, lies a game with both depth and ideas.
Visually, Rolo goes for cute, colorful graphics aimed at a family audience and younger players. The characters are likeably animated and the overall tone is cheerful and approachable. Even so, the game does not forget about challenge and can give you a real run for your money in the later levels.
Rolo to the Rescue belongs to those titles that fell through the cracks among the big names in their day, but among Mega Drive connoisseurs it holds a reputation as a hidden gem. It is proof that even a seemingly childlike-looking platformer can offer clever design and hours of fun for anyone who gives a chance to an elephant with a big heart.
Why play it: For the inventive system of switching animal abilities in a cutely crafted platformer that is smarter than it looks at first glance.
