Arcade motocross where the bike is balanced mid-jump by tilting, not simulated.

Motocross Maniacs is a racing game from Konami in which the player rides a motorcycle across hilly tracks full of ramps, pits, and obstacles, trying to reach the finish in the best possible time. The controls rest on a simple but responsive system of leaning and throttle, which requires the player to balance the bike in mid-air during jumps, bringing the game closer to an arcade platformer than a classic racing simulator. Besides simply reaching the finish, the player is also motivated by collecting coins and bonuses scattered along the track, which can later be spent on upgrades for the bike, such as better tires or a stronger engine.

As the game progresses, the tracks become technically more demanding and force the player to memorize the correct timing of jumps and braking, while the game also offers an editor in which players can design their own track and try it out in practice. On the Game Boy's monochrome display, the graphics look clear and legible, and the side-on view of the landscape, even with its limited palette of shades, is detailed enough for the player to spot upcoming obstacles in time, while the short, rhythmic melody accompanying the ride nicely supports the game's pace.

In the context of its time, it was one of the first genuinely fun racing games on a handheld, and thanks to its straightforward yet addictive gameplay, Motocross Maniacs has held onto its popularity even among later generations of retro players. The simple concept of both the controls and the tracks proved ideal for exactly the kind of short, repeatable play sessions the handheld was built for, and the easy "try again, faster" rule still works just as well today as it did on release. Today it's valued above all for its simplicity and quick play loop, which suits the nature of a portable console well, and it's often cited as one of the genre's textbook examples on the original Game Boy, one whose easy rule any player picks up within their first few attempts.

Why play it: For simple but addictive racing built on the "try again, faster" rule, it's an ideal short play session that every player will master within a few attempts.
