Scooby-Doo! Classic Creep Capers
Scooby-Doo! Classic Creep Capers builds on the classic setup of the series – the Mystery Inc. gang uncovers seemingly supernatural events that ultimately turn out to be the work of human villains in disguise. On the Game Boy Color, the game takes the form of an adventure focused on exploration, gathering evidence, and solving puzzles scattered across several spooky locations, with the player alternately controlling Scooby-Doo and members of the gang, each of whom has different abilities useful for solving specific puzzles – Scooby can squeeze through narrow gaps, while another character is better at handling objects or persuading side characters, and the player must switch between them and combine their abilities as needed to progress.
The game's pace is slower and places emphasis on observing the environment, combining items, and gradually uncovering clues, which sets it apart from the more action-oriented licensed titles of the same era and brings it closer to a classic point-and-click adventure in portable form. Visually, the game works with a darker, spooky color palette typical of the series, the humor and characterization stay true to the source material, and the music does a good job of evoking the atmosphere of mysterious mansions and abandoned places the player moves through, including haunted castles and derelict ships hiding further clues to solve the case.
At the time of its release the game was well received, especially among younger fans of the show and players who appreciated its calmer, puzzle-oriented pace compared to the platformers that dominated the licensed-game offerings on Game Boy Color at the time. Today, Classic Creep Capers is remembered as one of the better licensed adventures on the platform, thanks to its honest handling of the detective plot, which stays true to the spirit of the original show and its typical humor and exaggeration in portraying seemingly spooky mysteries.
