Basketbrawl
Basketbrawl is a basketball game tailor-made for the Atari 7800 – not a port, but an exclusive title built on a simple idea: basketball where fouls, shoving, and elbows are just as fair game as three-pointers and dunks. Two to four players (cooperatively or against each other) control teams whose goal is not just to get the ball into the basket, but also, if need be, to knock an opponent to the ground before they can take a shot. Penalty points for fouls are practically nonexistent, so the match quickly devolves into a chaotic scrum where reaction speed matters just as much as the ability to hit the hoop. At a time when other sports games were trying to get closer to real rules and player statistics, Basketbrawl went in exactly the opposite direction and turned basketball into an unrestrained spectacle where nerve and aggression win out over pure technique.
Visually, it's a typical late entry in the 7800 library – the characters are large, the court is clear, and the animations of falls and collisions are among the most entertaining things the game offers. The controls are simple enough for even a non-basketball player to handle, which made Basketbrawl an ideal title for quick two-player matches. The audio is understated but functional – hits, whistles, and the crowd in the stands flesh out the atmosphere of a packed arena where it's more about the show than pure sport. The court is confined to a single screen, so players are almost constantly clashing over the ball, and the pace of the match never lets up.
At the time of release, the game got lost among dozens of other titles on a dying console and never enjoyed much press attention, since the 7800 was already giving way to the emerging 16-bit consoles. Today, though, it's valued precisely for its unruliness – at a time when sports games were still searching for their way toward simulation, Basketbrawl openly bet on arcade fun and humor. Retro players appreciate it as proof that even the sports genre could be original on the 7800 and not take itself too seriously.
Why play it: With its openly arcade take on basketball full of humor and unruliness, it proves that even the sports genre could be original on the 7800 and not take itself too seriously.
