A Bond-inspired spy driving game with a musical theme derived from the Peter Gunn melody.

Spy Hunter from 1983 is one of the most distinctive machines from Bally Midway and remains a classic of the action-driving genre to this day. The player sits behind the wheel of a secret agent whose unmarked sports car hides machine guns, rocket launchers, oil slicks, and other spy gadgets straight out of Bond films. It was precisely this cinematic inspiration that gave the game its unmistakable atmosphere, further amplified by the legendary musical theme derived from the Peter Gunn melody, which accompanies the player throughout the ride and has become practically synonymous with the whole game.

The gameplay principle is simple at first glance – drive down the highway, avoid civilian vehicles, and eliminate enemy agents who try to run the player off the road or shoot them down. The route gradually leads the player off-road as well, onto open water, where the car transforms into a fast boat, which was a remarkable technical and design feat at the time of release. Progressively upgrading the arsenal at the mobile workshop gave the game a strong pull and motivation to play again and better, since losing the car meant returning to basic equipment. The fuel gauge and the need to tell which of the road vehicles was actually an enemy agent added further tension.

Spy Hunter became so iconic that it received countless ports to home consoles and computers, as well as later remakes, which however never fully matched the pure arcade energy of the original. The combination of action, speed, and a spy-movie veneer made it one of the golden standards of the early era of action arcade machines and inspired a whole generation of later driving action games.

Why play it: It offers an iconic combination of high-speed driving and shootouts with a spy-movie atmosphere that defined the entire genre of action driving games.
