IK+
IK+ (International Karate +) is a fighting action game designed by Archer Maclean for System 3, which on the Amiga perfected the concept of one-on-one combat that the author had first developed in the earlier International Karate. The player controls a karate fighter taking on two opponents at once on a single screen, having to track the movements of both rivals, correctly time attacks and defense, and make use of the background where a spectator subplot of its own unfolds. The goal is to score as many points as possible for various types of techniques before time or energy runs out, and the game also supports a duel between two human players, with the third combatant remaining as a comic filler between them.
The game system rests on precise and legible controls, where each combination of direction and button triggers a different technique, from kicks through throws to spinning strikes, and the player has to learn to read the opponents' reactions. A three-way fight brought unexpected tactical depth compared to classic one-on-one fighting games, since it was necessary to constantly assess which of the two opponents currently posed the greater threat. On the Amiga the game excelled with smooth character animation and the agility with which it responded to player input, making it an extraordinarily responsive experience even by today's standards.
Visually IK+ impressed with a minimalist yet strongly stylized background and characters, with humor added by small animations of spectators reacting to the course of the fight. The game was received extremely positively by critics on release and is still ranked today among the best fighting games of the eight- and sixteen-bit era, prized above all for the precision of its controls and the replayability of a duel between two human players. Its influence can be seen in later fighting games that adopted the emphasis on legible animation as the basis of a fair combat system, and for genre fans it remains a very enjoyable classic to this day.
Why play it: For fans of fighting games, IK+ offers precise controls and the replayability of duels between two human players, which even today will appeal to anyone looking for just a short but intense match.
