The fifth entry in the puzzle series; flashbacks reveal how Layton became a puzzle hunter.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask is the fifth entry in the adventure puzzle series, in which Professor Layton and his assistant Luke arrive in the town where Layton grew up to investigate the mystery of a strange figure known as the Masked Gentleman. The game combines classic point-and-click storytelling with dozens of logic puzzles scattered throughout the story, which the player solves by touching the stylus on the 3DS's bottom screen. The story also returns to Layton's student years through flashback sequences that gradually reveal how the professor became a passionate puzzle hunter.

Compared to the previous Nintendo DS entries, Miracle Mask brings a shift to 3D graphics and stereoscopic display, giving the characters and the town of Monte d'Or a more three-dimensional feel, without the game losing its signature hand-drawn visual style in the animated sequences. The puzzles include classic logic problems, item-based brainteasers, and spatial challenges, and the player can skip any of them at any time at the cost of in-game coins, making the game accessible even to less patient players. The music was once again composed by Tomohito Nishiura, whose melodies round out the series' peaceful, fairy-tale atmosphere and also accompany the story's more emotional closing passages.

Miracle Mask was received as a successful transition of the series to 3DS, preserving the charm of previous entries while making use of the platform's new technical possibilities. It was also praised for its amount of bonus content, including a minigame about building your own circus that supplements the main storyline. Critics especially praised the well-balanced puzzle difficulty and the enjoyable storytelling, though some voices noted that the series was starting to feel somewhat repetitive. Today the title is valued as one of the most approachable entry points into the Professor Layton series and an example of how well the logic-adventure genre fit a handheld with touch controls.
