Turok
Turok is based on the Valiant Comics character and made its video game debut in 1997 with Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for the Nintendo 64, developed by Iguana Entertainment and published by Acclaim. At a time when first-person shooters were still mostly a PC affair, Turok stood out on console for smooth analog aiming, more open environments and enemies ranging from dinosaurs to alien raiders, helping prove that the genre could work on N64 hardware.
The sequel, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (1998), is generally regarded as the series' high point, expanding the weapons, environments and multiplayer while pushing the N64 further technically. Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion (2000) introduced two playable characters, Joseph and Danielle Fireseed, closing out the story begun in the earlier games, while the spin-off Turok: Rage Wars (1999) turned the series into an arena-style multiplayer shooter. Turok Evolution (2002), released across more platforms including Xbox, told a prequel story but landed a cooler reception with both players and critics, effectively closing this chapter of the series for years.
A separately designed Game Boy Color entry accompanied the series, trading the main games' first-person view for a top-down, simplified action style suited to the handheld. On N64, Turok was also known for the thick fog its developers used to mask the hardware's limited draw distance – a technical fix that became an inseparable part of the early games' atmosphere and is still remembered as one of the series' signature traits.
