A rally simulation to which Codemasters returned after years away; weather changes the track surface.

EA Sports WRC is an official rally simulation created by Codemasters, which after years took over the World Rally Championship license from another publisher. On Xbox Series X and S, the game offers dozens of real tracks from various countries, faithfully rendered cars and teams, and a dynamic weather system that gradually changes surface conditions and visibility over the course of a single rally. The main draw is the Career mode, in which the player builds their own team from small races up to the top competition, chooses a co-driver, and gradually upgrades both the vehicle fleet and the team's facilities.

Driving is built on a physics model that emphasizes sensitive handling of throttle, brakes, and sliding on gravel, snow, or tarmac, making the game a more demanding experience than arcade racing titles. On the new console generation, the game particularly benefits from high-quality environment rendering, dynamic weather, and real-time shadows, which, together with a precise co-driver voice in the cockpit, create the atmosphere of a genuine rally race. Sound design and the tension of racing against the clock are among the game's strongest points, as is the noticeable difference between how a car behaves on dry versus muddy surfaces.

Reception at launch was mixed, as technical problems, missing features from previous installments, and a less extensive car roster compared to earlier series entries drew criticism from longtime fans, though subsequent free updates gradually fixed a number of shortcomings and expanded the selection of cars and tracks. Even so, the game earned recognition for returning to an authentic and demanding rally simulation on consoles, one built on honest driving rather than arcade accessibility. Today it represents, for rally fans, one of the few ways to experience the official World Rally Championship on Xbox and measure themselves against other players on the same real tracks they know from television broadcasts.

Why play it: For returning to an authentic, demanding rally simulation built on honest driving rather than arcade accessibility, it's one of the few ways to experience the official World Rally Championship on Xbox.
