A minimalist puzzle platformer with just two buttons - stomping and whistling.

Toki Tori 2+ is an unconventional puzzle platformer in which the little yellow chick Toki Tori has no ordinary abilities like an extra jump over a pit - just two simple actions, stomping and whistling. Yet out of this minimalism the game builds a surprisingly deep puzzle structure in which these two moves combine with the reactions of surrounding creatures and the environment. The player gradually discovers new areas of an open game world and returns to previously visited places with new knowledge, similarly to metroidvania games, just without weapons or combat. The game never harms the local creatures; instead the player observes them and learns how their behavior fits into a chain of cause and effect that opens the way forward. The island landscape Toki Tori moves through is full of small living ecosystems - caterpillars, frogs, and beetles - whose interactions form the basis of practically every puzzle.

On Wii U the game makes full use of the GamePad to display a clear world map and quickly switch between locations, which eases the typical "aha, now I know where to go" feeling characteristic of this type of game. The visual style is clean, colorful, and inviting, the music gentle and melodic, which contrasts with the rather demanding puzzles the game offers to those who decide to find all the hidden areas and complete the side objectives. The game also almost entirely lacks text and instructions - everything is communicated visually and through the characters' behavior, making it understandable regardless of language barriers.

Contemporary reviews praised studio Two Tribes's courage in building a game on such a limited set of actions and still creating a rich, thoughtful world full of organic puzzles, where the solution never feels forced but rather a natural consequence of observing the surroundings. Toki Tori 2+ is often cited as an example of how minimalist design can lead to maximum depth, and on Wii U it's among the titles that deserve attention even today thanks to the GamePad and its clean execution, especially for players looking for a calmer, more contemplative gaming experience without the pressure of a timer or fighting for survival.

Why play it: For players looking for calmer, more contemplative play without the pressure of a timer, its minimalist control scheme offers a surprisingly deep supply of organic puzzles.
