A classic lander about fuel and precision; one of the first cartridge titles for the VIC-20.

You slowly descend toward the surface of an alien planet, the fuel gauge nervously dwindles and you know that a single wrong press means a fiery end. Jupiter Lander is a classic lander, a game of patience and precision that was among the first titles supplied on cartridge for the Commodore VIC-20.

The task sounds simple, but the execution is treacherous. You control a landing module relentlessly pulled down by gravity, and with short bursts of the engines you correct the fall so as to touch down on a marked pad slowly and vertically enough. Each burst, however, consumes fuel, so you must not correct too much and at the same time not too little. Pads with a higher point value are smaller and harder to reach, which rewards the bold and punishes the impatient.

Jupiter Lander stems from the long tradition of so-called Lunar Lander games, whose roots reach back to the text and vector cabinets of the late seventies. Commodore released it in the early phase of the VIC-20's life as one of the titles meant to demonstrate what a modest computer with minimal memory could offer in the form of a gripping action simulation.

The significance of the game lies in how clearly it brought the principle of fine thrust control and fuel management into the living rooms of home users. This mechanic of precise landing became an archetype that appears in various forms in games to this day.

Jupiter Lander is a game in which there is no quick victory. It's a struggle with gravity and with your own impatience, and that is precisely why, even after decades, it can offer a small, focused moment of triumph when the module finally touches down smoothly.

Why play it: A gripping classic about precise landing and fuel management that turns every smooth touchdown into a small victory over gravity.
